I think everyone suspected this show was going to be different. Dave told earlier audiences to expect something special at Love Ride, and from being at a past Love Ride, I suspected the stage would be too small to support a catwalk for his “throne.”
The first surprise of the day was the modified throne, which now resembled a Harley.
The second surprise was the set. Instead of doing a standard Foo Fighters set, they mixed it up by alternating between Foo Fighters hits and classic rock covers in the style of Taylor Hawkins’ cover band Chevy Metal, who played Love Ride 30 (with Dave Grohl along for the ride.)
The Foo portion of the set was a little disappointing, because it stuck to the safest choices. I would have loved to have heard them mine their vast category a bit more, but they did have to make room for all the awesome covers. They started their set with “Learn to Fly,” and followed with a cover of The Faces “Stay With Me,” then back to the Foo originals with “The Pretender,” and then played Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ “Bout Love.” Hawkins sang lead on most of the covers, even coming out from behind the kit for “Tie Your Mother Down,” when guest drummer Bobby Blotzer from Ratt took a turn on drums.
Looking at the set list that @HawkinsHair posted after the show, it looks like a few of the songs they were planning on doing were cut due to time constraints. But even with a short set by Foo standards, it was an epic show and the band was obviously enjoying themselves. They went back to ending their set with the traditional set closer “Everlong,” which they have been opening their set with on this tour.
In terms of photography, most of the times I have shot the Foo Fighters have been at shows like this, shows where you could bring in a camera and shoot from the crowd. I got some fabulous photos of Chevy Metal at Love Ride 30, and decided that I would try it again for this show. I even managed to be in exactly the same spot I was in for Love Ride 30, second from the rail on stage left, which was exactly the best spot to shoot from. Shooting from the crowd allowed me to shoot the entire set, instead of just the first 3 songs, and I caught some really cool moments I wouldn’t have been able to capture otherwise. Dave was wearing a shirt featuring my favorite band, plus it had rained earlier and the day could not have been more beautiful, creating a gorgeous backdrop to the epic performance. I am absolutely thrilled with these photos; I have taken some epic Foo Fighter photos before, but I think this is my best work yet. It was absolutely worth standing in the crowd for 6+ hours to get these shots.
